Tribute to The Red Dress Project

When I first heard about the REDress Project for Missing and Aboriginal women, I knew I wanted to create a tribute to it in support. I went to the closest thrift store to find a red dress to work with. The one chosen photographed beautifully while still maintaining a tone of innocence and femininity. The idea of the REDress project is to draw attention to the plight of missing and murdered aboriginal women here in Canada in hopes of reducing the numbers and statistics of violence committed against aboriginal women. The creator of this project, Jaime Black stated that "Through the installation I hope to draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence," I hope that this small series tribute I have created through my photography will have the same type of impact to raise awareness about this topic.
